原计划KB仅是来攻击盟军水面舰队，没有考虑对58作战，因此KB编队中只带有金刚、臻名两艘BB护航，非常不足，此时出现瑞鹤负伤的状况，对日军造成了严重的问题，当日被盟军水面舰连抓两次，虽然未能攻击到CV，但是CV队的机动规避、损管不力导致瑞鹤号重伤起火。最重要的是KB向北退却，远离了58，丧失了一次宝贵的扩大战果的机会
