南鸟岛太小，58也不可能在这么靠近日本本土的地方常驻，原本就是个作为牵制作用的行动。如果盟军选择在这里消耗，对日军来说当然是不错的，毕竟换其他地方有大型机场支持的话，58的行动会更加安全，而机场的压制代价会大很多。

战斗已经进行到2月24日，似乎是为了报复日军在南鸟岛对盟军驻岛部队的轰炸，盟军在对霍洛岛狂轰滥炸数月之后似乎还觉得不够过瘾，调用攻击机进行超低空对地轰炸，企图扩大杀伤效果，结果被地面上的日军防空兵部队敲下数架飞机，不幸成为当天轰炸霍洛岛的盟军机队中损失最大的机种。# }4 ?/ s5 m: S9 W
