双方战斗机在天空大打出手，日军轰炸机部队乘机突入港口，对Gove港口进行了轰炸，虽然在战斗的后半段被盟军战斗机发现并截击，损失了一些飞机，但大部分轰炸机还是成功地完成了轰炸任务并安全撤退，由于被轰炸机群吸引，盟军的战斗机部队在最后也遭到了最后一个到场的紫电改机队的迎头痛击，分散追击中的盟军战斗机被击落相当数量，是当天盟军损失的主要来源。

最终夜幕降临，盟军损失了40多架P-47D25，10多架喷火8，此外还有一些P-47早期型号，作为代价，日军也损失了约50架战斗机和20架轰炸机，不过轰炸机都是老旧的九六陆攻机，损失并不算大
