从那次跑档不一致意外暴露盟军58分队的位置开始,大本营紧急判断盟军接下来可能会有两个可能的选择:
# a3 y3 {" l6 j  n/ h, p其一是小笠原群岛,其中共有3个岛屿,分别为硫磺岛,父岛和母岛,鉴于硫磺岛位置相对孤立,而且地形比父岛母岛更适合进攻(*2地形),因此,硫磺岛作为重点防御地段被紧急投入了重兵,这三个岛屿原本各自有一个师团加强一个旅团,平均战斗力都在600左右,在紧急增援中由于事发突然只能临时将本土配属其他地方的预备队拉上岛,所以在最后的地面战中还出现了准备度不足的惩罚,大本营估计发现58分队时,盟军登陆舰队已经出发,前出的58分队是用来侦查的。好在硫磺岛离本土相当近,三回合内,主要的增援船队已经到达硫磺岛,内线优势带给日军更快的反应速度和更多的反应时间,是本次战役最后能成功的一大因素。
) G7 R9 j! y7 z9 J- s大本营判断的另一个攻击方向是本土,鉴于盟军的58舰队实力已经是如日中天,根据硫磺岛战役过程中日军巡逻机和海岸警卫哨的侦查报告,盟军战前宣称的3000载机数量是真实的可能性比较高(光是硫磺岛D-DAY对地轰炸就出动了将近1500的飞机,再加上直掩机的数量,完全有可能达到3000+的载机)。以盟军舰队如此的实力,如果突然登陆没有防备的日本本土并非没有可能成功,而且对战局的影响远比占领硫磺岛更为严重,因此,在发觉盟军有意图从太平洋发动新攻势之后,帝国紧急从南方各前线大量抽调了大量机队转场本土配合防御,此举事实上严重削弱了前线的兵力,尤其是在正面临进攻的缅甸前线,直接导致帝国空军在缅甸的实力下降,被彻底压制,在与盟军航空兵战斗的过程中孤立无援几乎损失殆尽。但是此时事关重大,已经来不及顾及西南边陲的战事。这也算是27从太平洋发动攻势给其他战线带来的一个战略影响吧。* J, O: w# V1 ]& o3 U( a' y+ A) f
除了陆基航空兵方面,帝国联合舰队最重要的KB舰队也是紧急返港进行补充,由于事发时正在本土附近海域执行大规模反潜任务,因此KB舰队也是有史以来第二次在盟军大举进攻的前夜没有受到盟军的战略欺骗,处在随时可以支援的有利阵位(第一次是波纳佩反登陆战役,当时KB和联合舰队各战列舰分队采取不顾一切的全加速战术,用3天时间从远处各地赶到战区,许多军舰出现严重系统损伤和动力损伤,甚至帝国著名祥瑞某风舰还在路上与高速驱逐舰岛风号发生严重碰撞事故,不得不中途退出战斗,这可能也是波纳佩战役成功将盟军反推下海的重要原因。)
; }' t$ J8 i- |5 Y. P) b大本营总共在本土集结了超过1500架战斗机(其中有约200架新锐的、刚刚换装的KI-83远程护航战斗机)和1000+的攻击机,静待27舰队的最终攻击,其实这一切仅仅发生在短短数天之内,但是对于本大将来说,简直如同过了一年之久,对于本土能否抵抗住27的登陆,心中全然没底。中间的各种辗转反侧,踌躇犹豫,难以言尽。! d$ H  B" ^2 F6 A/ c2 P" `
然而最终27的选择还是相对简单的硫磺岛,(因此,尽管对于观众来说,似乎27敢于跨海攻击硫磺岛已经是胆略滔天的攻击,但是对于焦虑本土安全的本大将来说,确是心中一块石头落地,感觉简单多了)由于附近没有什么可堪一用的大机场,帝国陆基飞机无法派上用场,因此,KB舰队采取了“存在舰队”的策略,一边通过反潜等手段让盟军得知KB舰队就在附近的信号,另一边则始终保持着与58舰队的距离,由于58需要保护登陆船队和滩头,KB舰队有足够把握确信其不敢离开滩头过远,因此能确保安全,同时威慑着盟军舰队,令其行动受限,时刻需要保持对海,不敢过分支持对地轰炸等行动,间接支持了硫磺岛当地守军的战斗。
9 R% z4 h. G! H" E同时一部分来不及回防到本土被隔离在南洋的分舰队则组成游击舰队,开始游猎处于盟军舰队后方的各种运输船队,这个战术能得以实施在于一个好处,就是盟军舰队的跨海进攻路线经过马里亚纳北部海域,以马里亚纳为基地的巡逻机可以非常清楚地观测到盟军庞大的攻击舰队每天的行动路线,为游击舰队的伏击提供了非常准确的情报支持,否则,光靠游击舰队自身的力量,要在茫茫大海上捕捉到盟军船队,难度也是不小的。

地面部队方面,损失全部来自硫磺岛守军,在舰队炮击阶段损失了1000多人,在飞机轰炸阶段损失了约2000人,在登陆炮击被反压制阶段损失了4000+人,而在最后的地面战中又损失了2000+人,总的损失在10000人左右,火炮和车辆的损失也在可接受的范围内(本来也没布置多少)。) {$ z3 O0 `* r  B/ V4 Z2 i
