1943年10月2日凌晨,盟军庞大的炮击舰队在海面上四面八方将马绍尔的日军最后一个据点——Ailinglaplap环礁团团围住,展开了猛烈的炮击,随后美国陆军精锐骑兵一师在日军防线背侧顺利登陆,同岛上的陆军七师和陆战一师里应外合,一举攻陷了被盟军称为“伤心岛”的马绍尔群岛最大的环礁。& w$ R3 W& E. w& U4 \% R
7 D+ G$ R. Z) ?0 l岛上以42师团及57th旅团为主力的日寇3w余人在禁受了一个多月盟军的饱和轰炸后,早已弹尽粮绝日军马乏,战斗力从最初的600多一路下降到总攻前的220。

1 L" t) r+ m1 f+ U1 M# h盟军历尽两次兼顾卓绝的攻坚伤亡上万,最终夺取了这个马绍尔群岛唯一的5级机场,歼灭了盘踞在岛上的30,000多日寇,为历次作战歼敌数量之首。/ W3 s/ T4 t% E( l6 D
