日军在波纳佩经过连日激战,补给消耗的速度大大高于天蝗的预期,眼看就支持不住,天蝗不得已组织了东京快车对岛上日军进行补给,不幸被盟军太平洋舰队堵着正着,水面车轮战后全歼了这支东京快车运输队的10余艘APD,还顺带击沉了护航的水面战队日军轻巡天盐号和吹雪级驱逐舰一艘。
