可以说,战争还没有开始,只是古晋沿岸可以见到大战的端倪。Z舰队在400多架飞机的掩护下,将于14日夜间奇袭日军登陆场。对ambonia的增援正紧锣密鼓地进行。KB再次出现在珍珠港北方450海里位置,从那里航行一天还是可以攻击到珍珠港。通过多次航空队升级,盟军补充库里已经积聚了100多架精锐的P40战斗机,完全可以跟日军一战,估计日军空军主力还在台湾,古晋将是日军意图夺取的前进机场。

当日夜间,Z舰队对古晋登陆场的金刚榛名舰队发动了奇袭,双方一共交战两次,依照夜战惯例,日军巡洋舰和驱逐舰发射了密集的鱼雷海,亲王和反击奇迹般幸存下来,分别和金刚、榛名捉对厮杀。原本有着日军炮击射术第一美誉的金刚编队此次大失水准,两轮战斗中被亲王反击狠狠教训了一通,金刚在首轮接战中即被命中14寸炮4发而重创起火,第二轮接战时更悲惨地沦为亲王的活靶,被命中10余次之多,天亮后在古晋外海沉没。榛名同样落于下风,其14寸炮仅1次命中反击且未能穿透装甲,反击号战斗结束时连火都没起,其15寸炮命中榛名共计6发,将其击为重创。幸好失速不大,天亮时仍能逃到250海里以外,估计仍有20节左右的航速。护卫舰的战斗呈现一边倒的态势,日军的5CA1CL把盟军的1CA2CL打得无力还手,半数被击沉或重创,余者皆带伤起火,Z舰队经此一役丧失了一半以上的实力,正退往巨港方向。.
